Ask anyone who has used winter tyres in the past and we are sure they will tell you they are worth every penny. Most of our vehicles are fitted with winter tyres from mid November and they DO make a huge difference. They are designed to work better when the air temperature falls below 7 oC, the point where 'summer' tyres begin to lose performance. They can also make the difference between getting stuck in snow and ice and keeping moving.

The Tyresafe website has a page dedicated to winter tyres and you can view it by clicking this link. TYRESAFE WINTER

ALL SEASON TYRE OPTION

For motorists not wishing to buy winter tyres only for the winter season then revert to summer pattern tyres for the rest of the year another option is available. Some tyres makers supply 'All Season Tyres'. In the recent Auto Express winter tyre test Hankook's Optimo 4s achieved 'Best All Season Tyre' when tested against 8 other winter and all season tyres. The test confirmed that the Optimo 4S tyre provides an ideal alternative to winter tyres with 'relatively small compromises in winter and summer use'.

Full test results can be read at this link to AutoExpress

One of our best selling winter tyre brands named 'Apollo-Vredestein' has been tested in by a national TV network in Germany and the results of the test are reported below:

VOX tested five winter tyre brands – Apollo, Dunlop, Nokian, Pirelli and stable-mate Vredestein – on its “Auto Mobil” programme and concluded that “despite being a new kid on the block in the European market, Apollo, and its Acelere Winter tyre more than held its own among the big names in the tyre industry…in areas that mainly face rain and cold in winter, people should choose Apollo.”

Apollo Vredestein notes that the results from all the tyres tested for acceleration in snow and braking on snowy road surfaces were “very close”, adding that the Apollo Acelere “did well despite the stiff competition, including in slushy snow conditions.” The newcomer was certified as being “very safe” and was ranked third for acceleration and braking on snow.

Testing on wet and dry surfaces was also carried out. On dry roads, Apollo comments that its Acelere Winter’s braking distance was the shortest in the test “by a fair margin.” On wet surfaces the Acelere Winter was ranked first for braking, and Apollo says the tyre “also performed well” during the wet surface handling test and “maintained excellent traction” on wet surfaces at high speeds.

“The performance of the Apollo Acelere is sensational,” said VOX. With a third place in the overall rankings, the tyre was declared as ‘Empfehlenswert’, or recommended.
